Andrea once a rape victim now uses her tragedy to fuel her passion

What do you think of when you hear “She is a tough! She is a fighter!” Would you think of a 4 foot 11 inch woman in Texas? Well, this week’s Health Hero is a fighter! She is power and her name is Andrea Calhoun. Andrea is a trainer at a gym in Killeen Texas and today is one of the most competitive bodybuilders in the U.S. but that isn’t all that makes her our Health Hero . She has a story and a lesson that she has been sharing.

In 2009, Andrea was sexually assaulted by an ex-boyfriend in her apartment. He threatened her life with a gun and left bruises both physically and mentally. In Texas, rape is on the rise and Andrea made herself be a non-statistic out of fear, embarrassment and a desire not to have to recount the incident in court. Andrea was afraid to be judged and she was also afraid that people would look at her differently. All this mental anguish led to Andrea gaining 60 pounds but this anguish and weight gain was also what led her to the gym and her mission. Exercise became an outlet for her!

She suffered for 5 years in two more abusive relationships until her therapist helped her cope and to stop settling in relationships. Today, Andrea is single, studying to become a lawyer and inspiring people around the Texas area and the U.S. with her story of using exercise and determination.

We are proud to call Andrea Calhoun a Dr Nandi Health Hero
