Drugmaker Moderna claims clinical trial data found its vaccine is 94.5% effective.
This news gives me a lot of hope. Last week we talked about Pfizer’s 90% effectiveness rating. And now here is Moderna, with an even higher rate of 94.5. But we need to remain realistic. And just as with Pfizer, these numbers are preliminary and not set.
Participants: About 15,000 received the vaccine, 15,000 received the placebo
Vaccine: Two shots, given four weeks apart.
Covid-19 Cases: 95
Covid-19 Cases from Placebo Patients: 90
Covid-19 Cases from Actual Vaccine: 5
What’s really cool, is that 11 of these cases were severe – and they all were from the placebo group. So this indicates that the vaccine could potentially prevent people from getting severely sick.
Distribution: Moderna vs Pfizer
Distribution is incredibly important because if the vaccines are damaged in transit they could potentially no longer be effective. So what temperatures do they need? Moderna’s vaccine needs to be stored at minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit. While Pfizer’s vaccine needs to be kept at minus 94 degrees Fahrenheit – that’s really cold. That’s a huge issue because it most doctors office, clinic, and pharmacies do not have the freezing abilities needed to store that vaccine. That being said Modernas temperature is relatively easy to achieve. Plus, Moderna’s vaccine has a 30-day shelf life in the refrigerator and will last 12 hours at room temperature. While this news is very exciting, I still need to remind everyone that we are months away from being about to properly distribute this vaccine. So please continue to use caution and be safe!
