Lutein

A naturally occurring carotenoid, Lutein is significantly present in green vegetables such as kale and spinach. By consuming animal fats and egg yolks, you can maintain the level of lutein in the body. When humans ingest all the rich sources of lutein, lutein is absorbed primarily by the retina for the macula lutea. However, experts have failed to determine the exact nature of its role. Besides for health purposes, Lutein is also used as a pigment to achieve specific colors in the manufacturing of different supplements.

Even though experts have yet been unable to determine its role, they do know that lutein helps in maintaining the health of the retina. According to a study conducted, a diet that is said to be rich in lutein is known to significantly reduce the rate at which the macular degeneration occurs with age. While the use of lutein cannot entirely prevent age-related macular degeneration, it can be slowed down.

Additionally, according to observation, the macular pigment remarkably increased with the help of a lutein-rich diet. Other than that, there is also evidence that suggests a person’s ability to avoid developing cataracts as a result of increasing the ingestion of lutein. There is no recommended dosage for lutein; however, it is essential to look out for signs of excessive consumption such as skin bronzing.
