40,000 people gathered on the streets in London waiting to start the London Marathon. It was a record breaking temperature that day, but still thousands of people showed up to run and complete one of the most popular races in the world.

Gordon Ramsay Twins Race For Charity

As the gun went off to announce the start of the London Marathon, 2 of the registered participants were hopeful to run the race in under 3 hours and 30 minutes. 18 year old Jack and Holly Ramsay, twins of celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey, had put in many hours of training prior to this marathon, and they did so because their father offered to donate money to a charity of their choice. The catch? They had to beat his time of 3 hours and 30 minutes.

The twins decided to run for the Great Ormond Street Hospital, a specialist center in London which treats children with complex illnesses and performs research with many diseases. It was a great effort on the part of the kids, however they were unsuccessful in beating the time of their more experienced marathoner father.

Jack was able to complete the 26.2 miles in 4 hours and 30 minutes, while his sister Holly finished in 5 hours and 24 minutes. The twins and Gordon advocated for the charity weeks before the race and asked that other people join in and support the cause. Because of this they were still able to raise quite a bit of money for the Hospital.

Families Pursuing Health & Fitness Together

It is so great to see young adult supporting charities and to help out those less fortunate. It is also great to see the impact it can have when families live a healthy lifestyle together.

If it had not been for their father and his previous running experience, perhaps Jack and Holly would have never felt they could attempt such a physical feat. When parents are active, children will follow suit.  When parents support their children doing physical activity, children will stick to it. Countless times before the race Gordon expressed his support for his children and their goal on social media. The power that support has on children is amazing.

There are many benefits to living a healthy lifestyle as a family. One of the best rewards is being a happier family. Being physically active has proven to increase joy, this is because when you are moving and playing your body releases special hormones that actually increase happiness.

It can strengthen family ties by giving you activities outside and it expands the boundaries of things to do and places to go. Also don’t forget that living a healthy lifestyle includes eating well. There are many different diets that exist these days, but the best way to ensure that your family is eating well is by making a fresh, home cooked meal and eating it together as a family.

Partha’s Prescriptions

Here are some great ways to start getting your family up and moving:

  • Set aside one day of the week and go on a family hike. Most people live within a reasonable distance to some sort of hike, if you don’t, try just going on a family walk. Even 30 minutes of walking can help you feel great!
  • Train for a race together. You don’t have to be quite as extreme as Gordon Ramsey and his children. You can start small with a walk-a-thon, then move to a 5K, 10K, and maybe eventually a marathon.
  • Family tournaments. There are many sports than can be turn a tournament based game. Try 1-on-1 games like golf, tetherball, and tennis. Or maybe try 2-on-2 and play soccer, basketball, or even some yard games. Try giving an incentive for the winner such as, not having to do the dishes for a week. This is a great way to have a little friendly competition and get out of doing chores for a week.
  • Encourage your children to try out sport on a city league team.  And once they are playing, go as a family to games for support. Make signs and cheer. Practices the sports together at home. There is nothing better than having a cheering section shouting your name.

So try it out with your family, see how being active can improve your relationships.
