Shannon was born and raised in rural Montana surrounded by a culture that did not tolerate those who were different. She spent her entire childhood hiding her truth from everyone around her including those she loved most. At the age of 18 Shannon went off to Basic Training and continued on to serve over 11 years in the U.S. Military. After many years of distinguished service, Shannon could no longer bear the burden of her secrets and the lies that surrounded them, she found the courage to be the woman she always knew she had been deep down. The road was long and full of discrimination, loss and pain, but she will tell you that it was worth every step, every tear, every sacrifice, because now she is truly happy.
Today, Shannon educates so that others don’t have to hide who they really are. It is her mission to relieve the suffering of those who are seen as “different”, to increase awareness for the need to be respectful, accommodating and non-discriminatory. Change can happen, but it requires your courage and your action.
