Local celebrity steps up to help granddaughter with rare genetic disease

He is a well known celebrity in the Detroit area. Many people see a strong and confident newscaster but many do not know the fight he is waging against a sinister disease. Stephen Clark has become a spokesperson for a rare genetic disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy or SMA. Clark did not plan on this but when his granddaughter was diagnosed at 10 months old, he made it his mission to help Scarlet and others afflicted with SMA. The disease makes it nearly impossible for the body to build muscles and what muscles they have begin to slowly waste away. Clark spends free time with Scarlet and his daughter, helping with whatever is needed around the house to keep Scarlet happy and most importantly …..healthy. You will see Stephen at various fundraisers around town to help raise money for SMA research being done at the University of Michigan Mott Children’s Hospital. So the next time you turn on your TV and see Stephen reading the news, don’t forget that he is also a Dr. Nandi “Health Hero”.
