William Belfry will always tell you that he was healthy. He never missed work because of a cold but that all changed one day when he casually asked his doctor to check out a lump on his neck. His doctor had him go to a specialist immediately who gave William the news that he had cancer after a biopsy. After undergoing radical surgery to get rid of this cancer, William had to deal with the after-effects of the surgery. 2.5 years later, they discovered another cancer which was unrelated to the first cancer. Again, William went back into the hospital for more surgery and radiation. After getting better from this surgery, again William was diagnosed with another type of cancer which meant more surgery, radiation and rehabilitation. Plus, William had to deal with some of the issues caused by the surgeries and radiation.

William believes that his surviving these cancers is due to his great doctors which include Dr. Nandi and his positive outlook on life. William has said that if you think that you have lost the war, you will not survive. He also believes that people who are fighting an illness such as cancer can have a positive effect on their well-being by not being a victim of their own thoughts and by having a positive image of themselves. We are proud to call William Belfry this week’s Health Hero.
