For decades, one of the most stubborn fault lines in American public opinion seemed frozen in place, locked in a statistical dead heat that bridged generations. Yet, beneath the surface of seemingly immovable cultural and political divides, a quiet but profound shift was taking place regarding a fundamental question of human origins. A sweeping analysis of 35 years of national polling reveals that the balance has finally tipped. The real story, however, isn’t just that opinions are changing—it’s the unexpected drivers behind this shift, revealing fascinating insights into scientific literacy, identity, and the nuanced ways we process new evidence.

The Numbers — How Acceptance Finally Crossed 50%

More than half of Americans now say they accept evolution. That’s the headline finding from a University of Michigan-led study that tracked national opinion data going back 35 years, from 1985 to 2020, and published it in the journal Public Understanding of Science.

The researchers, led by Jon D. Miller at U-M’s Institute for Social Research, pulled together a long run of national surveys: biennial polls from the National Science Board, several studies funded by the National Science Foundation, and a set of civic literacy surveys backed by NASA. Every one of them put the same question to American adults: do you agree or disagree that “human beings, as we know them today, developed from earlier species of animals?”

For more than two decades, the answer was split almost down the middle. From 1985 through 2007, acceptance and rejection ran neck and neck — what Miller described as a statistical dead heat. That held steady through the ’90s and into the 2000s. Then, starting around 2016, the balance tipped. Acceptance climbed past 50% and kept going. By 2019, 54% of American adults agreed that humans developed from earlier species, up from 40% just ten years before.

Put that 14-point rise in context and it’s more striking. A 2005 comparison across 34 developed nations found only one country scoring lower than the U.S. on this question: Turkey, at 27%. So this shift doesn’t put America in line with its peer nations yet — it almost certainly still trails most of them — but it does break a pattern that had held for a generation.

One more detail worth noting: the researchers found this increase mostly came from a shrinking “unsure” group, not from committed skeptics changing their minds. That distinction matters — and it raises the obvious next question: what’s actually pulling people off the fence?

What’s Actually Changing Minds — Education and Scientific Literacy

So what moved 14 percentage points of the country from doubt to acceptance? The study points squarely at education — and specifically, at science education.

Among all the factors the researchers measured, exposure to college-level science courses was the single strongest predictor of whether someone accepted evolution. That held true in 1988, and it held true in 2019. It didn’t matter much which science course — biology, chemistry, physics, anything counted — just having sat through college science classes made a measurable difference. Overall degree attainment mattered too. Adults with a bachelor’s degree accepted evolution at meaningfully higher rates than adults with only a high school diploma, and that gap has been consistent for three decades. Co-author Mark Ackerman put it simply: it’s hard to earn a college degree without picking up some respect for how science actually works.

Here’s the part I find most interesting as a physician: the second-strongest factor in the whole model wasn’t education attainment itself — it was something researchers call civic scientific literacy, or CSL. That’s not the same as a degree. It’s the practical ability to read a science story in the news, understand what a study actually claims, and separate a real finding from a marketing pitch. In 1988, only 11% of American adults qualified as civic-scientifically literate. By 2019, that number had nearly tripled to 30%. And people with that skill accepted evolution at roughly double the rate of people without it — a gap that’s barely moved in 30 years.

I bring this up because CSL is the exact same skill I want my patients to have. It’s what lets someone understand why their flu shot is a different formula every single year, why finishing a full course of antibiotics matters, or why a “miracle” supplement claim doesn’t hold up. Evolution acceptance and health literacy aren’t separate topics — they draw on the same muscle. A body of research from this same research group has actually studied that overlap directly, tracking how Americans acquire health information alongside science information generally. The more comfortable people get evaluating scientific claims, the better equipped they are to make good calls about their own health, not just their views on biology class.

What’s Holding Some People Back?

Education explains a lot of the shift toward accepting evolution. It doesn’t explain everyone. The same study identified a force working in the opposite direction — and it’s stronger than education by a wide margin: religious fundamentalism.

When the researchers built a full statistical model to predict evolution acceptance, holding every other factor constant, religious fundamentalism came out as the single biggest predictor in the entire equation — bigger than college science courses, bigger than degree attainment, bigger than scientific literacy. Roughly three in ten American adults score as religious fundamentalists by the study’s measure, based on things like literal belief in the Bible and frequency of prayer. That share has ticked down slightly over the past decade, but only slightly.

Here’s a detail worth noting: even the most fundamentalist respondents moved toward acceptance over time. In 1988, just 8% of that group accepted evolution. By 2019, that had climbed to 32%. Change is happening there too — just far more slowly than everywhere else.

It’s worth being precise about what “fundamentalism” means here, because it isn’t religion in general. Evolution is taught without controversy in Catholic schools, and mainline Protestant denominations generally accept it as well. The resistance concentrates in a specific strand of conservative Protestantism built around treating the Bible as a literal, inerrant record of history and science.

Political identity tracks closely with that same divide. As of 2019, 34% of conservative Republicans accepted evolution, compared with 83% of liberal Democrats. That gap isn’t new — Pew measured a 10-point difference between the parties back in 2009 — but it has widened every time it’s been checked since.

I see a version of this pattern in my own exam room, and it rarely has anything to do with intelligence or curiosity. A patient’s stance on a vaccine schedule, a new mRNA therapy, or even basic nutrition advice often traces back to the same identity-driven trust at play here. When a scientific fact runs up against someone’s religious or political identity, people tend to protect the identity first. That’s not a character flaw — it’s just how people process a challenge to something core to who they are. It’s also why more data rarely changes a mind on its own. Respecting the identity attached to a belief, while staying honest about the evidence, tends to work better than arguing the facts louder.

Why the Number Depends on How You Ask

The 54% figure comes from one specific yes-or-no question. Change the question, and the number moves quite a bit.

The newest data available makes that clear. Pew Research Center’s 2023–2024 Religious Landscape Study, based on nearly 37,000 U.S. adults, didn’t ask a straight yes-or-no. It gave people three options: humans evolved with no involvement from a higher power, humans evolved but a higher power guided the process, or humans have existed in their current form since the beginning of time. Only 17% picked that third option. Add up the other two, and 80% of Americans accept some version of human evolution once “God-guided evolution” is on the table as a middle ground. That’s a very different headline than “54%” — and it tells you something real. A chunk of the earlier “rejection” numbers were never actually about rejecting the science. They were about not wanting to rule God out of the process entirely.

That distinction is worth sitting with, because it shows up far beyond evolution. Framing something as an all-or-nothing choice between evidence and belief tends to push people toward “belief,” even when they’d accept the evidence on its own terms if given room for both.

As for where this heads next: the original study’s authors are cautiously optimistic. College enrollment keeps rising, and civic scientific literacy keeps rising with it — both trends that predict more acceptance over time. Working against that momentum: evolution has grown more politically charged over the past decade, not less, and the researchers expect that trend to keep dragging on progress. So the number will likely keep drifting upward. Just don’t expect it to happen fast, and don’t expect politics to stay out of it.
