We all experience times that we’re depressed or feel anxious about something… but for those who suffer from anxiety disorder and depression, the challenge to just get through a day is real.
In the United states… anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness affecting 40 million adults or about 18% (18.1%) of the population every year. Those with anxiety disorders, often have depression too and visa versa.
Depression affects more than 16 million US adults (16.1 million) and is the leading cause of disability in 15 – 44 year olds. Women have a greater chance of having depression than men.
Every day as a gastroenterologist, I have patients who come to be about GI issues… and after I evaluate them, I find they also have depression, anxiety and mood disorders.
Certainly a lot can contribute to the cause of these. Things like low self-esteem, alcohol or drugs, prescription medications or family history… but I’ve seen it time and again… improve the health of your gut and you’ll improve your mood, your immune system, and many chronic conditions.
