All About Autoimmune Disease

Autoimmune disease is a scourge of the modern era. It happens when our immune system goes haywire and begins attacking the cells in our own body. Now obviously, our immune system isn’t supposed to behave this way. It’s there to protect us, not harm us. Our modern obsession with processed foods combined with an environment that’s soaked in toxic chemicals has really created a monster. Today one in five Americans is affected with an autoimmune disorder.

Maggie Berghoff

My first guest is Maggie Berghoff, a nurse practitioner. She has an increasingly common autoimmune disease called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. From the outside she seemed like a regular college student: seemingly healthy, busy, stressed, and dealing with yo-yo dieting. First, she noticed her leg swelling, then she rapidly gained about 50 pounds. Besides Hashimoto’s, she also has PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome). The two conditions can often go hand in hand. Her menstrual cycle was off and she had a huge appetite and sugar spikes. Luckily she was able to work with a functional doctor reversing her condition through natural methods instead of covering it. She was able to heal her gut and correct nutritional deficiencies.

Dr. Tom O’Bryan

My second guest is Dr. Tom O’Bryan. He is one of the world’s leading authorities when it comes to autoimmune conditions and is the author of The Autoimmune Fix. He is a doctor, author, and international speaker and workshop leader. Dr. O’Bryan and I discuss how autoimmune diseases always attack the weakest link in your body. He explains that traditional doctors treat autoimmune conditions by suppressing the immune system. And he says this is a mistake. Your body is trying to protect you and you have to support it through diet and lifestyle. It is important to heal the gut and correct nutritional deficiencies. Some foods need to be removed, gluten being one of the main culprits that can trigger autoimmunity.

Dr. Amy Myers

My third guest is Dr. Amy Myers, a functional medicine doctor with an expertise in autoimmune diseases and New York Times Bestselling author. She is the author of the Autoimmune Solution. Dr. Myers knows about autoimmunity from personal experience. During medical school, she started having symptoms such as weight loss, tremors, insomnia and more. First, her doctor brushed it off to being a busy student who just returned from the Peace Corps.  But soon she was eventually diagnosed with Graves’ disease. As a doctor, she found functional medicine and made it her mission to help those with autoimmune conditions. She explained that the root cause of the issues is a gut imbalance, Candida, and leaky gut. All of this can lead to autoimmunity. She helps her patients and readers to repair their gut and nourish their cells to reverse their autoimmune conditions.

Dr. Keesha Edwards

My last guest is Dr. Keesha Edwards. She is a board certified functional medicine practitioner, psychotherapist, and integrative medicine expert. She used to be a big believer of Western medicine, until one day, practically overnight, she began developing symptoms, including weight gain and joint pains. She was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. She didn’t want to take harsh medication, so she started to look for answers outside of Western medicine. She found Ayurveda, one of the world’s oldest holistic healing systems.  She also learned meditation and yoga. She has also connected how her past trauma affected her health through trauma release therapy.
