Many are manageable with treatment, but some are progressive and life-threatening. The causes of autoimmune disorders aren’t entirely known. What we do know is that they’re thought to be a combination of genes, environmental factors, and something that triggers the immune system. Genes are one major factor in developing an autoimmune disorder. The risk of developing one is higher if you have a family member who has one. Environmental factors may be things you’re exposed to, such as certain drugs or toxins, diet, or stress. Something that triggers the immune system may be something you’re exposed to, such as a virus.
