A survey conducted on behalf of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) revealed that 99.7% of Americans believe that a smile is an important social asset. Furthermore, when researchers asked the participants, β€œWhat types of things do you consider make a smile unattractive?” the number one response was: discolored, yellow, or stained teeth. (1)

Consequently, it is no surprise that we’ve had quite an explosion in teeth whitening treatments in recent years, either performed in dentist offices or at home. However, some teeth whitening treatments may contain harsh chemicals, which raises concern in many health-conscious people. So, naturally whitening teeth at home may be the answer. Here some at-home remedies to consider:Β

Baking Soda & Lemon Juice to Whiten Teeth at Home

Baking soda is one of the most versatile ingredients on the planet. When utilizing this Jack of all trades to brush your teeth, it helps remove stains. Also, its alkaline composition regulates the PH in your mouth, preventing bacteria from growing. It also neutralizes the acidity in the lemon juice. (2)

Create a paste by mixing 2 to 4 teaspoons of baking soda, and adding lemon juice until you reach the desired consistency. Apply it onto your teeth with a toothbrush for about 2 to 3 minutes. Rinse thoroughly. Repeat this process a few times a week until desired results are achieved.

Whiten Teeth At Home With Coconut Oil Pulling

Oil pulling has been practiced for thousands of years as part of the Indian Ayurvedic tradition. This practice is believed to pull toxins and bacteria out of the mouth and gums by using oil to absorb them. Typically, sesame or sunflower oil is used.Β  However, employing coconut oil, which contains 50% lauric acid, rich in antimicrobial properties, can kill pathogens, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. (3)

Before brushing your teeth, spoon Β½ to 1-Β½ tablespoons of coconut oil into your mouth and swish it around for 10-15 minutes. Treat it the same way you would a mouthwash. Then, spit the coconut oil out and brush your teeth as usual. You can do this daily, weekly, or monthly depending on your needs.

Banana Peels To Whiten Teeth At Home

Bananas’ natural sweetness, low acidity, and high potassium make them a great healthy snack. However, using banana peels may also help to whiten your teeth. You just need to cut the banana peel into small pieces, rub them onto your teeth, wait three to five minutes and brush your teeth as usual. Repeat this a few times a week for the best results. (5)

Whiten Teeth At Home With Activated Charcoal

Activated Charcoal has been used as a poison antidote since the 1800s because it can bind with various drugs and reduce their effects. Furthermore, activated charcoal is believed to help remove teeth stains by absorbing plaque and other teeth-staining elements due to its highly absorbent properties.

Place some activated charcoal powder onto your toothbrush. Brush your teeth gently in circular motions for two minutes. Spit it out and rinse it out. (4)

More To Consider

Whether you decide to try to whiten your teeth at home or the dentist’s office, you should also consider incorporating some measures to prevent tooth stains, such as:

  • Limiting staining foods and beverages like coffee, tea, wine, berries, and more.
  • Brush and floss your teeth regularly.
  • Eat fruits and vegetables with higher water content.
  • Reduce your sugar intake.Β
