Research suggests that it is best to wash your hands with soap and water. They have found that over-the-counter antibacterial soaps are no more effective at killing germs than using regular soap.
Guidelines for Washing Hands
Wet your hands with clean, running water. Using either warm or cold is effective.
Apply a generous amount of soap and lather very well.
Rub your hands vigorously for a minimum of 20 seconds. Remember to scrub all surfaces, including the backs of your hands, wrists, between your fingers and under your fingernails.
Rinse very well.
Dry your hands with a clean towel or air-dry them if possible.
How to use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
Alcohol-based hand sanitizers, which don’t require water, are an acceptable alternative when soap and water aren’t available. If you are using a hand sanitizer, make sure the product contains at least 60% alcohol. Anything under the 60% alcohol level will not be effective.
The Proper Steps of Hand Sanitizers
Apply the gel product to the palm of one hand. Always check the label to find out the appropriate amount.
Rub your hands together vigorously.
Rub the gel over all the surfaces of your hands and fingers until your hands are dry.
Remember to wash your hands frequently and to reduce the number of times you touch your face!
