Are you someone who both gets terrible migraines and LOVES coffee? You may be able to mitigate your migraine risk by drinking two cups of joe a day or less.

Have Your Caffeine – Just In Moderation

The good news is that you can have 1-2 servings of caffeinated beverages each day without an increased risk of migraines. However, that third serving could push you over the edge and increase your risk. The study involved 98 individuals who suffer from episodic migraines. The study tracked their caffeine intake, health behaviors, and headaches over 6 weeks. The results showed that those who had 3 or 4 more servings of caffeinated beverages per day were 1.4 times more likely to get a migraine that day. Those odds jump to 2.64 when the number of servings is 5 or higher. A ‘serving’ of coffee or tea was considered to be between 6 and 8 ounces, while a soda was 12 ounces.

While these numbers may not seem that high, those who suffer from migraines may disagree with you. What’s more, you may not be aware that some foods and medications can also contain caffeine. Many know chocolate has caffeine, but so can ice cream, frozen yogurt, pudding, even some breakfast cereals. Pain relievers (including PMS medication) often contains caffeine to help the medication work faster.

So if you’re a migraine sufferer, you may want to stick to one caffeinated beverage per day if you consume caffeine in other forms as well.

Know Your Triggers

Migraine triggers are unique to every individual – so it’s important to know yours.

Besides caffeine – what else can set off your migraine? Pay attention to sleep changes, emotional stress, diet, light or sound sensitivity, hormonal changes, and even changes in the weather. You may find it useful to keep a diary to look for patterns when a migraine strikes. This can help you make a plan with your doctor to reduce suffering from migraines.
